The calm you feel under something heavy is not only in your head. Firm, even pressure across your body shifts your nervous system toward rest.
This was an earlier issue, and it is worth another look. The mechanism is more physical than soothing-blanket talk suggests.
Your nervous system runs on two settings, one that drives and one that calms. Broad, gentle pressure on the body feeds the calming side.
It is called deep pressure stimulation. The steady weight sends a wash of sensory input that nudges you off the alert setting and toward the resting one.
As that balance tips, arousal drops. Your heart rate and your sense of being keyed-up ease, and the body stops bracing.
Not every lever for memory is in the bedroom
The forgetting in question is the everyday kind: where you left your keys, and the bigger things, like names, faces and dates.
Memory researchers at the University of New Mexico recommend you stop one everyday kitchen habit.
One small change. According to the researchers, it can strengthen your memory and sharpen your focus, starting today. Over 47,000 people have already made this simple change.
For you, that is the difference between lying there tense and actually loosening. The weight does some of the settling your racing system will not do on its own.
With arousal lower, sleep comes with less of a fight. Less tossing at the start, and a steadier descent into the night.
That is the morning after a night you did not spend winding yourself up. You went down sooner and stayed down.
The anchor is a study by Ekholm and colleagues in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Patients with insomnia who used a weighted blanket improved more than those with a light one, and were far more likely to reach something close to normal sleep.
Note the group studied had insomnia alongside psychiatric conditions. The effect should carry more broadly, but the size in an everyday poor sleeper is less pinned down.
TONIGHT
Here is the move. Use a weighted blanket at roughly ten percent of your body weight, settled over you before you drift off.
Pick a breathable one, and here is the catch to watch. Weight can trap heat, and your core needs to cool to sleep, so choose a light, airy build and do not let it overheat you.
If you run warm, size down the weight or use it only as you fall asleep. Cool room first, then the weight, not a hot blanket fighting your temperature.

The last hour is about dropping arousal, and this one does it through the skin. Let the weight settle your system while the cool room settles your core.
