Around 4am, in your longest stretch of REM sleep, your brain is supposed to be stripping the charge from the worst moments of your day. You feel none of it.

Whether it can depends on what you put in front of it in the last hour.

You have fixed the light and the caffeine. This one is about what you feel, not what you take.

REM sleep is the only time your brain runs almost entirely without noradrenaline, the chemistry of stress and alertness. That absence is the point. In that low-stress state, your brain replays the day's emotional memories and files them without their original charge. The memory stays. The sting comes off.

Researchers call it overnight therapy. It is why yesterday's upset feels smaller this morning than it did last night.

Now feed your brain something distressing in the last hour. A news feed. A work argument. A show that spikes you.

Two things happen. The emotional load your brain has to clear tonight just went up. And your racing mind pushes sleep later, cutting into the REM that does the clearing.

REM runs heaviest in the second half of the night. Lose the back half and you lose the stage that files the charge away.

So you wake with the charge still on. The argument still stings. The headline still sits in your chest.

In a study published in Current Biology, a normal night of REM left people's threat center, the amygdala, far calmer in response to emotional images the next day. The stage had drained the reaction while they slept.

That study measured REM's effect on emotional reactivity, not distressing media at bedtime. So the last-hour link is a sound inference from how the stage works, not something the study tested directly.

TONIGHT

In the last hour, keep emotionally activating content off your screen. No news, no doomscrolling, no work inbox, no show that leaves you wound up. This is not all screens and not forever. It is the charged content, in this one window.

If your mind is already turning something over, put it on paper and set it down, the way you would tomorrow's tasks. Give REM less to carry.

The emotional weight you carry into the last hour is the weight your night has to lift. Hand it less, and REM clears what is left while you sleep.
