Acid can rise into your esophagus all night and fragment your sleep without ever producing heartburn. You never feel it, so you never blame it.

You have fixed the light, the noise, the air. This one is happening inside you, silently. A ring of muscle at the top of your stomach is supposed to stay shut while you sleep. Certain foods relax it.

High-fat and fried foods slow your stomach from emptying and loosen that ring. Acidic foods add acid to what can rise. Then you lie down and gravity stops helping. Flat on your back, there is nothing holding the acid below the valve.

Each time acid touches the lining of your esophagus, your brain registers it and pulls you toward waking. You surface into a lighter stage without ever opening your eyes. Most of these events never reach heartburn. The acid retreats before you feel a thing.

You do not wake gasping or clutching your chest. You wake tired and assume it was stress.

So the deep stage keeps breaking and never runs long. You wake foggy, sometimes with a raw throat, from a night that felt uneventful.

In a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, people who ate dinner within three hours of lying down had far more reflux than those who left a longer gap. The short gap was the difference, not the size of the meal alone.

That was an observational study, so it shows a strong link, not proof of cause. The mechanism behind it, though, is well understood.

TONIGHT

In the last hour, keep the acid-triggering foods off the menu. Fried and high-fat foods, citrus, tomato, and anything spicy are the main offenders. Alcohol belongs on that list too, and you already moved it earlier. It relaxes the same valve on top of everything else it does.

A small, low-fat protein snack is a different thing and still fine. If you do eat, stay upright for a stretch before you lie down. When you lie down, choose your left side. It keeps the acid lower than your back or right side does.

The acid you never feel is the deep sleep you never reach. Keep the triggers out of the last hour, and the night stops breaking from the inside.
